Why words matter: The overuse of jargon in marketing

You know who's the best at using marketing jargon? Marketers who write job descriptions for their department.

I'm helping a friend with her move into the industry. I remember how intimidated I was when I first started out, thinking I didn't understand "marketing speak". Inbound, outbound, digital, channel, SEO, content, impact, awareness, etc. I'm curious if others ever felt intimidated, too?

EXAMPLE: Executes content marketing tactics leveraging appropriate communication channels.

What it means = Put the right communication in the right place so it gets the most visibility/reach

EXAMPLE: Design and develop marketing impact reporting

What it means = Create a spreadsheet or chart that shows if our marketing efforts worked.

EXAMPLE: Rockstar

What it means = Although I wish this meant the employer will give you a wide berth to try new tactics, it really means is they are going to expect you to do everything and there’s not really a great plan in place.

What other examples do you have?
