We have a toxic workplace culture. Is there anything we can do?

Ignoring a toxic culture is easier than changing it, however to put it into terms that employers might resonate with, companies cannot afford to not address workplace toxicity. The loss of revenue due to turnover and staff absences alone is reason enough.

Take a look at these statistics from an article in Harvard Business Review (Seppala, Cameron, 2015):

  • Health care costs at toxic companies are nearly 50% greater than at other organizations

  • More than $500 billion is siphoned off from the U.S. economy because of workplace stress

  • 550 million workdays are lost each year due to job stress

  • 60% to 80% of workplace accidents are attributed to stress

  • In a study of over 3,000 employees results showed a correlation between poor leadership behavior and heart disease in employees.

Identify what type of role you play in workplace culture. Are you a passive-enabler or an active-enabler? (Swanson, 2019).
